Centralized Otolaryngology Research Efforts (CORE) 2023 Update

The CORE grants program plays a vital role in advancing the field of otolaryngology by supporting research projects, research training, and career development.

The Centralized Otolaryngology Research Efforts (CORE) grants program is an AAO-HNSF collaborative initiative involving various societies, foundations, and industry supporters. CORE aims to promote the growth and development of promising researchers in the field of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery by offering support for their research projects, research training, and career development. The recipients of CORE grants share a common goal of improving patient health and driving progress in the field. Even after the conclusion of their grants, many CORE awardees continue to make significant contributions to the field of otolaryngology. For examples of past awardees and their experiences, read the 2023 CORE Spotlights.

The CORE program has several key objectives.

  • It inspires and supports young investigators in the field of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery by providing resources and guidance, fostering the participation of the next generation of researchers in advancing the study of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.
  • It brings uniformity to the research application and review process for the field of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery by centralizing these processes. This streamlined approach reduces costs and burdens associated with individual grant programs while promoting efficiency and consistency.
  • It serves as a valuable steppingstone for researchers, offering a valuable pathway for them to progress and ultimately secure grants from institutions such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and to further advance their research endeavors.

Since its establishment in 1985, the CORE Grant program has awarded over $13 million in funding. The support has been made possible through the participation of various partner societies, foundations, and industry partners, which include the following:

  • American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF)
  • American Head & Neck Society (AHNS)
  • Association of Migraine Disorders (AMD)
  • American Rhinologic Society (ARS)
  • American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology (ASPO)
  • GSK

The collaborative approach from these groups ensures meritorious projects will receive funding each year, contributing to the advancement of otolaryngology-head and neck surgery.

In March, the CORE Study Section reviewed and assessed a total of 225 letters of intent and 161 complete applications seeking over $2.3 million in funding. A panel of 65 reviewers were divided into three subcommittees:

  • Head and Neck Surgery chaired by Jeffery Liu, MD
  • Otology chaired by Rick Nelson, MD, PhD
  • General Otolaryngology, chaired by Michael J. Brenner, MD with Chair-Elect, Murugappan Ramanathan, MD

In 2023, a total of 32 grant opportunities were available, providing a combined sum of $620,000. Notably, the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Foundation (AAO-HNSF) contributed $255,000 specifically toward these grants.
