2021-2022 AAO-HNS/F Committee Highlights

The AAO-HNS/F Committees continued to advance the otolaryngology specialty throughout the 2021-2022 term. The committees are the lifeblood of the AAO-HNS/F and a great way for members to contribute meaningfully to the organization and the specialty. The committees met during the AAO-HNSF 2022 Annual Meeting & OTO Experience and discussed achievements during the past year and planned for 2023.   • This new committee is the work of a balanced effort from our AAO-HNS members who dedicate their practice to caring for children with cleft lip, cleft palate, and other craniofacial differences, which is equally represented by Pediatric Otolaryngology and Facial Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery.
  •  The primary goals of the committee are to leverage the strengths of this collaborative group to expand and improve cleft and craniofacial patient by otolaryngologists through the creation and dissemination of educational content, novel research, and patient advocacy.
  • Working together, we will create a platform for cleft and craniofacial training in otolaryngology to develop consistent milestones and inspire future generations of cleft surgeons from our specialty, all while collaborating with our other colleagues in cleft care.

Patient Safety & Quality Improvement Committee

  • Received the AAO-HNS/F 2022 Committee Excellence Award
  • Submitted and cosponsored over 20 Panel Presentations to the AAO-HNSF 2022 Annual Meeting & OTO Experience and 12 were accepted for presentation
  •  Continuously committed to implementing best practices through articles published in the Bulletin and by sharing practices at their institutions related to safety and quality improvement. Some examples of best practices shared by committee members include:
    • Utilizing an insights dashboard to track M&Ms by outcome and error type
    • Disseminating PSQI-related information and recognizing individual contributions through a departmental newsletter
    • Developing PSQI education for residents
  • Launching a TeamSTEPPS education initiative across an institution’s Surgical Care Line Team in coordination with the Department of Quality and Safety

  • Reviewed numerous different payer/insurance policies and made comments on their coverage policies; provided extensive documentation to support expanding coverage for sleep surgery for our patients

Shuman, MD, presented the John Conley, MD Lecture on Medical Ethics: “Reflections on Our Profession in the Face of an Ongoing Pandemic,” which explored how to respond to these challenges. Dr. Shuman’s lecture focused on today’s political and healthcare policies to contextualize broader, less time-sensitive themes.

  • Revamped existing workgroups and rolled out the below workgroups:
    • Scholarly Output Workgroup: Group is responsible for ensuring relevant and timely humanitarian efforts-themed symposia abstracts are submitted for consideration as part of the AAO-HNS Annual Meeting Call for Science. Group will brainstorm topics, draft submission, recruit speakers.
    • Humanitarian Travel Grant & Awards Workgroup: Group is responsible for promoting the Humanitarian Travel Grant program, reviewing applications, and selecting awardees.   Group will also be responsible for soliciting nominations/recommendations for the Academy's International & Humanitarian Awards program.
    • Communications: Virtual/Outreach Workgroup: NEW WORKGROUP- Group is responsible for leading communications initiatives to engage physicians looking to learn more about Humanitarian Efforts opportunities.  They will share best practices, resources, program information, etc.   The group will help create and update web content, organize webinars/podcasts, push out information via the Academy's communication channels and partner will other committees on initiatives as needed.
