Jackie Cole, Director, Creative ServicesJackie Cole, Director, Creative ServicesThis month, we spoke with Jackie Cole, Director, Creative Services. Jackie leads the look, design, branding, and visual storytelling efforts throughout the Academy. If you’ve been to the Annual Meeting, for instance, you’ve seen the signage that she and her talented team produce to help get you where you’re going and maximize your experience.

How long have you been at the Academy?
Since September 2014; over 11 years! I started as a Graphic Designer and have grown with the organization.

What do you do as Director, Creative Services?
I oversee all the visual storytelling for the Academy, from the Annual Meeting materials to our digital presence. The Annual Meeting is always the culmination of our year's work, and I love it because it reminds me of the WHY—why we do what we all do, day in and day out. Seeing our attendees network and learn in person is what it's all about.

Tell us about one of your most memorable moments working for the Academy.

After months of design work and planning, there's something magical about seeing it all come together in person. Watching our members connect face-to-face is incredibly fulfilling. What really inspires me is our members themselves. They're juggling patients, families, and personal lives, yet they still find time to volunteer for the Academy. Whenever I'm feeling overwhelmed, their passion re-energizes me. Plus, since the meeting is in a new city each year, I get to explore places I might have otherwise overlooked!

How did you get involved in your area of work?
I've always been a creative problem solver who cares deeply about people. I love using color and design to communicate messages effectively, and in this role, I get to support our members while helping the public and patient population through visual storytelling. I started as a Graphic Designer in 2014, became Senior Graphic Designer in 2019, and was promoted to Director in 2021. Moving into the Director role has allowed me to think more strategically about how design serves our mission.

I've become interested in watercoloring, specifically plein air painting. I love plein air painting because it combines my appreciation for color with the joy of being outside. I'm also an avid walker and love exploring new trails with my four-year-old mutt, Tripp, who's always up for an adventure.

Coffee or tea? Dogs or cats?
Coffee—two cups with half and half, no sugar—and dogs, all the way!
