The otolaryngologist as endocrine surgeon

Otolaryngology is an amazingly diverse specialty, extending from medical treatment of allergies to a wide-range of pediatrics, and from otology/neurotology/skull base surgery to head-neck surgery, and now, thyroid and parathyroid endocrine surgery of the neck. One must keep in mind the high prevalence of hyperparathyroidism in our patient population.

Gender and strength

I know something of strong women. My wife of 33 years, Lorraine Randolph, is my guiding light, providing guidance and the blessings of our children, Greg Jr., Benjamin, and Madeline. When I am unsure, I ask Lorraine. Francis Randolph, my mother, now 93, single-handedly, in an alcoholic household, raised four children while teaching full-time.

The Academy is our calling

As a third-year Cornell Medical College student I had a basic science research background and strong clinical interest in reproductive endocrinology. It was then I took my otolaryngology-head and neck surgery rotation and met Roy Sessions, MD, then the sole otolaryngologist on the renowned head and neck surgical service of Memorial Sloan Kettering.
