World Voice Day 2025: Empower Your Voice
One of our most important tasks is to educate our patients on what constitutes a healthy voice, empowering them to nurture and protect their voices and use them with confidence, purpose, and passion.

World Voice Day on April 16 is a day that allows us to spotlight the singular importance of the human voice. This year’s theme, “Empower Your Voice,” is an ardent appeal to the public to educate themselves about their voice and to strengthen their voice, literally and metaphorically, with this knowledge.
This year’s collection of articles can be described as a “laryngology potpourri,” bringing focus to a few of the more common voice-related issues seen in an otolaryngologist’s office. The April eTOC edition of the Bulletin features an article on laryngeal dystonia and another on the use of steroids in the treatment of voice disorders. Later this month, the Apil EXTRA will cover concerns related to the aging voice along with a “bonus” article on retrograde cricopharyngeal dysfunction (the inability to belch). This condition—though not strictly a voice-related issue—is a disorder seen increasingly in laryngology practice, largely due to the collective power of the patients’ voices through social media.
Voice disorders can rob patients of their lifeline to the outside world, be it talking with family and friends, singing in a musical performance, yelling out in an emergency, or inspiring those around them with their spoken perspective. As physicians, one of our most important tasks is to educate our patients on what constitutes a healthy voice, empowering them to nurture and protect their voices and use them with confidence, purpose, and passion.
The American Academy of Otolaryngology‒Head and Neck Surgery has sponsored the U.S. observance of World Voice Day since its inception in 2002. Through the years, the Voice Committee has supported this worldwide event by providing educational resources for healthcare professionals and patients, including the following Q&A video for patients, answering common questions about seeing an otolaryngologist/laryngologist for voice symptoms as well as vocal care, conditions, and treatments.
