IUSM Mission to Eldoret, Kenya
Aaron C. Moberly, MD Resident Humanitarian Travel GranteeIn February, I had the privilege of traveling to Eldoret, Kenya, with a group of ENT physicians (Susan R. Cordes, MD, Edward C. Weisberger, MD, and Michael G. Moore, MD), anesthesiologists, and nurses from Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM.) We worked with ENT surgeons of Moi University School of Medicine (MUSM) at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH). MTRH is a government-run hospital that serves Kenya’s Rift Valley and western provinces surrounding Eldoret, the fifth largest and fastest-growing city in Kenya. IU has had a partnership with MUSM since 1989, working on cultivating healthcare leaders in all specialties in the United States and Africa. In 2009, Dr. Cordes became the first IU ENT physician to travel to Eldoret, and she continues to make semi-annual trips to take part in teaching, medical student exams, clinics, research, and surgery. The busy two weeks included preoperative clinic evaluations, operating in two ORs generously set aside by the hospital for our surgical team’s use, teaching medical students, and advancing the IUSM-MUSM otolaryngology partnership. We undertook a total of 46 surgical cases, among them: thyroidectomies for enormous goiters, resections of advanced salivary tumors, and endoscopic nasal and sinus surgeries. Thanks to the generous grant support of the AAO-HNSF and Alcon Foundation, I was given the opportunity to experience the Kenyan culture and medical system and to take part in an ongoing IUSM-MUSM partnership. Although I played only a small role in this partnership, I gained an appreciation for the hard work, time, and energy required for international medical missions.
