The AAO-HNSF Resident Reviewer Development Program (RRDP) invites experienced peer reviewers to help guide the next generation.

Relaunching in 2025, this unique program, offered by the AAO-HNSF journals Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and OTO Open, pairs seasoned reviewers with residents eager to learn the art and science of peer review. The RRDP has proven to benefit mentees, mentors, and the journals, creating a robust framework for peer review training that strengthens the entire specialty. Deputy Editor Jennifer J. Shin, MD, SM, who oversees the program for the journals, said, “It’s a unique program and a good fit for our Academy’s journals as the AAO-HNS also has such a strong education mission.”

Aaooto Miami2024 Su 2734Since its inception, the RRDP has consistently produced skilled reviewers, with over 175 graduates completing over 2,300 reviews! Among these graduates, many have gone on to become star reviewers, Editorial Board members, Associate Editors, and even mentors themselves. “As a resident, I thought peer review was restricted to faculty. The whole peer review process seemed like a mysterious black box,” said John D. Cramer, MD, a mentee-turned-mentor. “Getting involved in the peer review process provided insight into that black box.” Dr. Cramer completed the program as a mentee with its first graduating class in 2017 and became a mentor soon after.

A past mentee, Natalie M. Krane, MD, previously shared, “My involvement in the Resident Reviewer Development Program began as a fourth-year resident. I was paired with a mentor with extensive reviewer experience (not to mention numerous publications of her own), and together we built my knowledge base and confidence reviewing manuscripts...” This step-by-step guidance empowers residents, preparing them to become confident and competent reviewers.

The mentor–mentee relationship can even extend beyond success in peer reviewing skills. Thomas S. Edwards, MD, a 2020 program graduate, previously shared, “My mentor, Dr. Ahmad Sedaghat, was incredibly dedicated to the program and my development. I was lucky to be paired with him.”

RRDP mentors enjoy both professional growth and a fulfilling experience guiding young otolaryngologists. Engaging with eager, motivated residents also opens up new perspectives and enriches mentors’ skills in critical analysis and constructive feedback.

Eligibility and Commitment

To mentor in the RRDP, prospective mentors must have substantial peer review experience specifically with Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery or OTO Open. Mentors should also have the availability and willingness to review three to six papers for their mentees over the two-year program, providing thoughtful and constructive feedback. In addition, mentors may be invited to participate in virtual meetings or Zoom-based training sessions to support mentees and engage with the RRDP community.
