Section for Residents and Fellows-in-Training report from the AAO-HNS/F 2017 Leadership Forum and BOG Spring Meeting
We’ve concluded another exciting AAO-HNS/F Leadership Forum & BOG Spring Meeting in Alexandria, VA! The Section for Residents and Fellows-in-Training (SRF) would like to extend a huge thank you to the Academy and BOG leaders, as well as the AAO-HNS/F staff, for their hard work and dedication in hosting an excellent meeting.

We’ve concluded another exciting AAO-HNS/F Leadership Forum & BOG Spring Meeting in Alexandria, VA! The Section for Residents and Fellows-in-Training (SRF) would like to extend a huge thank you to the Academy and BOG leaders, as well as the AAO-HNS/F staff, for their hard work and dedication in hosting an excellent meeting. The packed agenda included informative legislative meetings, leadership and diversity panels, BOG committee meetings, among many other topics. Keynote speakers included Denice Cora-Brambles, MD, MBA, CMO and EVP of Children’s National Health System; Martin B. Gold, JD, a partner at Capitol Counsel; Meena Seshamani, MD, PhD, Director of Clinical Performance Improvement at MedStar Health; and Mike Hamilton, chief of staff for U.S. Representative David McKinley (R-WV).
During the conference, the SRF sponsored two successful panels. On Saturday morning, Peter Constantino, MD, discussed crucial aspects of contract negotiation. The session was well received by meeting attendees across all career stages. On Sunday morning, a panel of Academy leaders including Samantha Anne, MD; Ayesha N. Khalid, MD, MBA; Sanjay R. Parikh, MD; and Maie St. John, MD, PhD, discussed the importance of our “EQ,” or the “emotional quotient,” in clinical practice.
As always, the Spring Meeting was a great opportunity for networking. Attendees were welcomed Friday night with a reception at the Westin Alexandria Hotel. Saturday’s agenda included “speed mentoring,” where all meeting attendees rotated through small-group round table discussions that included a mix of residents, fellows-in-training, young physicians, and both academic and private practice leaders in otolaryngology. This was a great opportunity for attendees to listen and share perspectives about relevant topics such as work/life balance, promoting your practice, choosing a practice setting, changing jobs, and maintaining academy involvement. That evening the ENT PAC hosted a well-attended bowling/bocce event, which was a great success! Residents enjoyed a fun, relaxing evening with leaders in the field.
Sunday’s agenda concluded with presentations from the two AAO-HNS/F President-elect candidates, Albert L. Merati, MD, and Eben L. Rosenthal, MD. Don’t forget to vote for president-elect and other Academy/Foundation leadership positions in the election between Monday, May 8, and Thursday, June 8! Overall, the Spring Meeting was a great opportunity for residents and fellows-in-training to network with leaders in otolaryngology and learn more about professional development, leadership, emotional intelligence, and advocacy.
