Harry Barnes Medical Society“The [Humanitarian Efforts] Forum truly fostered a sense of community and inspired collaborative efforts to address healthcare challenges on a global scale.”

Ivy Maina, MD

Thanks to a travel grant from the Harry Barnes Medical Society and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee, I had the privilege of attending the Academy’s Annual Meeting & OTO Experience in Nashville last year. As a fresh PGY-5 resident about to embark on a career as a comprehensive otolaryngologist, I looked forward to the opportunity to meet with and learn from my current and future colleagues. I was also excited to further explore the many latest advances our field has to offer. Attending the meeting did not disappoint!

From cutting-edge research to innovative clinical practices, the Annual Meeting showcased the forefront of the field, enriching my understanding of the latest developments for our patients. Learning from seasoned experts about building a new practice added a practical dimension to my experience, providing valuable insights into the intricacies of establishing and managing a successful otolaryngology practice. The meeting also provided a unique platform for networking, allowing me to forge connections with new colleagues who share a passion for otolaryngology. Engaging in conversations with fellow professionals not only expanded my professional network but also facilitated the exchange of insights and ideas from seasoned otolaryngologists.

One highlight of the Meeting was the Humanitarian Efforts Forum, where colleagues discussed their experiences and initiatives in global health and international otolaryngology surgery. The Forum served as a nexus for professionals dedicated to making a positive impact beyond borders. Sharing my own experiences in global health projects that span from Rwanda to Tanzania was also an incredible opportunity as it allowed me to meet other students and residents interested in joining this work. The Forum truly fostered a sense of community and inspired collaborative efforts to address healthcare challenges on a global scale.

I will be forever grateful to Harry Barnes’s legacy and the continued commitment of the Harry Barnes Medical Society and the Diversity and Inclusion Committee to promote diversity within our field and provide future-oriented opportunities for underrepresented minority trainees.

I remain committed to actively engaging with the committee’s efforts and continuing to support its values and goals. I look forward to attending future events and contributing to the betterment of the Academy.

Once again, I thank you all for this invaluable opportunity.
