Wanted: A Long-Term Medicare Physician Payment Proposal
In late February, Congress again passed legislation (H.R. 3630) to halt the 27.4 percent cut in Medicare physician payments that was scheduled to take effect on March 1. This latest legislative compromise extends the payment cut reprieve through December 31, 2012. The AAO-HNS and others in the physician community continue to urge federal lawmakers to permanently repeal the flawed Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula and reject short-term patches that provide little-to-no stability for physician practices and their patients. While there remains strong bipartisan support for such legislation, the required budgetary offsets continue to hamper the process.
